Zen saying

"Just this."

This reminds me of a story I heard. Not sure if it's true or not. The final exam of a college philosophy course was going to count toward almost all of the students' grade for the semester. It was one question and it read "What is courage?". One student got up after about thirty seconds, turned in their paper and left. On the paper was written, "This is". :)

Hmmm, couldn't change the timestamp on the template, so I believe all comments are off by an hour....

I like that, too. The story didn't say what grade the "courageous" student received. :) If it's a true story, they either did such great work the semester that their answer earned an "A". Or, they had been the class clown all semester and got a "D" or "F".

Well, in my opinion, the paper deserves an A! :)

I thought it was pretty good, too. ...Philosophy, like art is great because no one is "wrong". For some, "this is" would be reckless, not courageous. I myself would never have come up with it. I think it's pretty genius. You know, come to think of it, probably reckless and courageous are the same thing???? :) Talk about things that make you say "hmmm"...

Hmmm, indeed. I guess whether an action is considered reckless or courageous would depend on the view of the beholder, although intention would be an important aspect of it I would think. But what a great question, "What is courage?"! And one that each of us should have to write a paper on! Yes, if all of us had to define courage for ourselves, maybe we would end up having more courageous lives?
